Matthew 25 AIDS Services revives its Bowling Green AIDS Walk, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 31, at Preston Miller Park. It is free, with food trucks and resource booths.
The Bowling Green AIDS Walk is coming back. Matthew 25 AIDS Services will hold it from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 31, at Preston Miller Park.
The nonprofit calls the walk “a meaningful tradition from our early years.” It is bringing it back to mark 30 years of service, according to Matthew 25’s event page. The walk is free.
What is planned
The event page lists:
- a community walk “in solidarity and remembrance”
- local community resource booths
- food trucks
- music and family activities
- information on HIV prevention, education and support services
Walkers can take part on their own or as a team from a workplace, church or group of friends. Teams are asked to raise money for Matthew 25. Awards go to the team that raises the most and to the largest team.
The fundraising page showed $1,020 raised toward a $5,000 goal on Friday afternoon. Matthew 25 says every dollar raised stays local.
Who runs it
Matthew 25 began in 1996 as a volunteer effort of Zion United Church of Christ in Henderson, Kentucky, about 85 miles northwest, according to the nonprofit’s history page. Its first location was a one-car garage behind the church.
It now provides HIV care and prevention across 25 counties in western Kentucky and 12 in southern Indiana. Services include medical care, an in-house pharmacy, case management, housing and food assistance and transportation.
Its Bowling Green clinic is at 944 Fields Drive, Suite 102. It is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. The phone number is 270-904-7029.
What it means for you
- Mark the date: Saturday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to noon, at Preston Miller Park. That leaves time for trick-or-treating later in the day.
- The T-shirt deadline has passed. Walkers had to register by Oct. 1 to get the official shirt. The event page does not say whether you can sign up on the day, so call the Bowling Green clinic to check.
- Expect a busy morning in town. The bg26.2 marathon weekend also starts Oct. 31.
- Testing and prevention help is available year-round. Matthew 25 offers HIV testing and PrEP through its clinics.
